Florence impresses with its Renaissance architecture and treasure-trove art museums. But look beyond the splendour and you’ll discover the Tuscan capital’s more intimate heart, one that beats to the rhythm of busy trattorias, traditional coffee, designer shops and boutique hotels.

The latest addition to the city’s hospitality scene, La Gemma, is a lavish family-run property just steps from Piazza della Repubblica. Despite its prime location, it offers a serene retreat in the heart of Florence.

Timeless roots

The hotel is housed in the magnificent 19th-century Palazzo Paoletti, designed in 1895 by Italian architect Tito Bellini. Over the years, the building has evolved—from the residence of the Guild of Hoteliers to a Zara department store—before returning to its hospitality roots, thanks to the Cecchi family.

La Gemma’s name is a tribute to the new owners, incorporating the initials of Luca and Alessandra (parents) and their children—Ginevra, Edoardo, Massimiliano, Maria Sole, and Andrea. You might meet Edoardo welcoming guests at reception or see Alessandra and Maria Sole talking business at the Luca’s restaurant at the hotel.

Effortlessly chic

Like many boutique hotels in Italy, it’s a modern space inside a historic palazzo but has a distinctive soul, its every corner oozing character and personality.

The interior design is a striking blend of Italian minimalism and Art Deco influences. Green dominates the colour pallet with some powder pink accents alongside bold geometric patterns, mirrored walls, opulent marble surfaces, sumptuous textiles, and bespoke furnishings. If you’ve ever wanted to live like a reigning contemporary Tuscan family, La Gemma is the place to be.

Embracing your inner Italian

The hotel embodies the essence of Florence—stylish and sleek, creative and confident, proudly Italian. The interiors evoke the sophistication of tonal dressing, as if the rooms themselves were a distinguished Italian gentleman clad in monochromatic Zegna cashmere, jovially mingling with the crowds at Milan Fashion Week.

There are 39 spacious rooms and 15 suites, each unique in size and layout. Some have balconies, others feature terraces overlooking the Duomo, and a few lofts include private patios. Regardless of configuration, every room exudes the same refined aesthetic—dark green cushions, tropical-themed wallpaper, wooden floors, and thick velvet curtains.

Luxury touches

Marble bathrooms are outfitted with Devon & Devon fixtures and Gio Ponti ceramics, with complimentary Votary skincare products (yes, you can take them home, just like in the old days!). Slippers may not be waiting upon arrival, but rest assured, they’ll appear at your bedside during the next turndown service, alongside fresh water and chocolate.

The complimentary non-alcoholic minibar is a thoughtful touch, and for those craving something stronger, a wine fridge sits conveniently beside the bed. Stream your own music through the Marshall Bluetooth speaker to make yourself feel even more at home.

There are also modern conveniences, including in-room iPads for ordering food and drinks, as well as a beautiful Faber manual coffee machine—a bit of a challenge to master, but well worth the effort.

For an unforgettable wake-up routine, sip an espresso while wrapped in a Rivolta Carmignani bathrobe, gazing out at Florence from your window or the rooftop terrace—a hidden gem with postcard-worthy views of the city and the Duomo.

The bar, with its floor-to-ceiling mirrors and checkered marble flooring, is a true showstopper.
